THE BLUE PLANET II EFFECT

Since Blue Planet II aired, some retailers have been trialling plastic-free aisles, using alternatives to plastic and have accepted that people now want to bring their own tubs to the supermarket (and don’t look at you funny any more when you do).

Organised mass unwraps have caused retailers to rethink their policies, which is incredible. Campaigns like Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s War on Waste and SAS’ ‘return to offender’ have now reached the boardrooms of the supermarkets.

Well done.

But are the supermarkets doing enough, especially when you think of the scale of consumer support for plastic-free food?

Aldi pledged to make all of its own-label packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2022.

Asda pledged to remove plastic from its stores where possible.

Iceland pledged to eliminate plastic packaging from its own label range by 2023.

Iceland also introduced a plastic bottle recycling scheme in four of its stores across the UK whereby consumers were rewarded with a 10p voucher for every deposit.

Lidl has announced that its £1.50 Too Good to Waste boxes – which contain slightly damaged fruit and vegetables – will be launching across the UK.

Sainsburys has reduced its own brand packaging by 35 per cent since 2005.

Tesco announced that it is launching a trial to remove a selection of plastic-wrapped fruit and vegetables in a bid to cut down on packaging waste.

Waitrose has said it is committed to stop using black plastic packaging for all own label goods and has removed plastic bags from grocery aisles, replacing them with paper.

Marks and Spencer now takes non-recyclable plastic back at all their stores to turn into playground equipment through Terracycle.
